[2:41 PM] Nerf: It was already the end of the day when Sally entered the convoy wagon, her silent and agile steps giving the impression she was trying to sneak into the cart without being seen, in a similar fashion than a thief would do.
Of course, had that truly been the case, she would not have been able to get very far before being noticed. As soon as she put one feet inside the wagon, the loud and cheerful chirping of a group of pigeons broke the silence of the night, as if the birds were attempting to greet her.
"Not so loud kids", she replied with a smile as she looked at the small birdcage that was hanging from one of the walls, inside of which were three pigeons. "Someone might have gone to sleep early."
Surprisingly, her words seemed to have some sort of effect, the loud chirping being replaced by a soft coo almost immediately. Seemingly satisfied with this, Sally moved to her corner of the wagon, stopping right next to the birdcage in front of a large wooden trunk.
With an absentminded movement, as if she had already done this a million times, the Branded woman removed one of her gloves, poking at her fingertip with a small needle with just enough strength to draw a single drop of blood, before crouching next to the old trunk.
[2:41 PM] Nerf: Once she did so, the reasons for her strange behavior would become evident, at least for anyone well versed in the fields of magic. Unlike what one would usually expect, the trunk did not have any sort of lock, but instead a strange looking rune was drawn in the place where one should be. Pushing her finger against said spot, Sally simply watched as the rune reacted to her blood, emitting a weak light as it did so.
Soon, a somewhat creepy sound could be heard as the enchanted trunk slowly opened itself, revealing a small but valuable collection that would have made more than one apothecary jealous: small bottles filled with strange looking liquids, bags that held brightly coloured powders, herbs that filled the air with a strong smell, and all other kinds of strange items whose utility would only be known by a small handful of people, all carefully organized inside the trunk.
Lets see...what am I going to need?
[10:52 PM] Best New Kid 🥑 | Sky: Sally had been right. Someone did go to sleep early. In fact, Alistair and Celeste both had done so. Boreas was awake, sure, but he quite frankly wouldn't have cared if he had noticed anything. He was too busy doing a personal experiment with runes and such outside of the convoy wagon. She might not have saw him, but he saw her. But regardless, it wasn't like he cared as long as she didn't interrupt what he was doing.
But while Boreas was busy for the moment, and Alistair sleeping, Celeste's eyes fluttered open as she heard the chirpings of the birds. She knew the chirps from anywhere: they were those adorable pigeons stored in their wagon by one of the Pack members. Celeste loved animals, and these birds were no exception.
She wondered if they were hungry or if they saw something or someone. Regardless, she was going to check things out. So she squirmed out from underneath her comfortable blanket and got up to approach the birds to see what was up. As she did so, she noticed it was one of the members, as per one of her many guesses. She was delighted! If memory served, she was the keeper of the birds since she interacted with them almost as much as Celeste did... But she couldn't for the life of her remember her name...
"Eh, what's really a name?" she thought, "as long as she knows I'm talking to her, it's all good," she reassured herself in her mind.
"Hey stranger," she said with a yawn and a half-attempt for a wave as she approached the woman rummaging through that interesting chest she could never get to open. "Finding everything alright? You seemed to have woken up the feathery babies, the poor things," she said with an exaggerated frown aimed towards the pigeons.
[7:13 PM] Nerf: Stranger?
As she slowly turned around to see who was talking to her, Sally discerned the silhouete of Celeste approaching through the wagon, her demeanor far too calm for someone who had just been woken up by a stranger in the middle of the night.
She probably just didn't recognize me. After all, it is quite dark, and I was facing the other way.
"It's me, Sally", she clarified before Celeste could jump to any conclusions, mistakenly believing her words meant she had not recognized who she was. "I was just going through my stuff to get some ingredients for a spell. Sorry for not telling you in advance."
Following the young woman's eyes, Sally's gaze stopped at the birdcage on the wall, on the same spot Celeste was frowning at.
"Hmm, seems like they are feeling quite energetic today. They usually don't make a sound once it gets dark." She gave Celeste an apologetic look. "Did they wake you up?"(edited)
[12:15 AM] Best New Kid 🥑 | Sky: "Oh, right, right, Sally, silly me, sorry about that!" she said casually, as if she wasn't even embarrassed or genuinely sorry about it, "Silly ol' Celeste had your name slip on me. It happens to the best of us. Hell, if Alice wasn't always yelling at me for everything, I'd prolly forget my own name! Besides, I recognized you were one of the Pack, so I wasn't worried," she said with a smile and a giggle, seemingly getting over the pigeons' cries now that they were awake anyway. Not much changing that now.
"And don't even worry about not saying anything to us. Alice didn't seem to wake up, and it's Bo's turn to watch the wagon so he's already awake. At this point, we're used to people coming and going as they please, so they hardly wake us up anymore," she explained, "But these babies? Yeah, they sure woke me up! But it's not like it's your fault or anything, I would wake up to any animal making too much noise. I'm a sucker for cuties," she said, referring to animals.
"Well they usually don't wake up at night, but their Mommy showed us so of course they are!" Celeste said, "And now that the babies are awake, I suppose I should feed 'em a little snack, they always love that," she explained to Sally about her own pigeons as she feed them some sunflower kernels, ones she had already taken the time to crack open and save just for the birds. It was evident that she spoiled them, saving them the trouble of cracking the seed's shells like normal birds would.
[11:17 PM] Nerf: Did she really crack the seeds beforehand? Why would you...
Standing up from the floor of the wagon after getting what she needed from the chest and making it disappear inside the inner pockets of her cape, Sally watched as the pigeons rushed towards this unexpected treat, happily flapping their wings as they devoured the kernels in a matter of seconds.
"Well it seems like they like you." She admitted to Celeste. "And to think I was wondering why they seemed to be getting fat." She laughed.
"But if you really want them to love you...", Sally stopped for a dramatic pause, knowing this would grab Celeste's attention. "I recommend you to try giving them grapes. Believe it or not, but they go crazy over those. Just try not to do it often, or they'll start ignoring their usual food."
Slipping one finger through one of the holes in the birdcage, she carefully petted the head of the nearest pigeon as she spoke in a quiet and soothing voice. "There, there. Now be a good bird and go back to sleep. Young kids like you should not be awake at this hour."
[12:43 PM] Best New Kid 🥑 | Sky: "Hehe, well of course they like me! All animals do!" She said with a cheery smile as she continued feeding the sunflower seed kernels to the feathery babies. "But I can tell they love their Mommy more," she said towards Sally.
If Alistair were awake, or if Boreas were listening to the conversation, they reminisce about the multiple dangerous animals that have tried to kill Celeste somehow, but that she would shower with love no matter what, believing that they'd become nicer with enough love. There have been countless bears, venomous snakes, wild cats, and even a honey badger once that they had to force her to get rid of for the safety of the convoy members as a whole.
"G-grapes?! Ohhhhhhhhhh, I knew I should've bought some when I had the chance!" She pouted, "I only didn't because I don't like them, but if I knew there precious babies loved them so much, I would've bought the whole stock..." She cooed the the pigeons, also scratching another one of their heads as Sally was doing. She had completely disregarded Sally's words about how much grapes they should get. She'd spoil these babies rotten in a heartbeat, perhaps in half of one, even.
"I suppose it is past your bedtimes, isn't it?" She continues cooing in a baby voice, "well you heard your Mommy, you babies need their rest"
[11:02 PM] Nerf: "The whole stock?!" Sally reacted, immediately regretting telling her about the grapes. "Please don't. They'll get sick if you give them that many. One or two per pigeon should be fine."
Realizing the pigeon whose head she had been scratching had just fallen asleep, Sally lowered her voice as she moved to the third one, noticing not without a certain amount of pride that despite Celeste's best efforts, she still hadn't managed to completely calm her one pigeon like she had done. Instead, the small bird remained at a more prudent distance, not quite moving away from the young woman's reach, but not fully embracing her touch either, as if it hadn't yet decided what to think about her.
Seems like they do love me more after all...
"Hey, Celeste..."
Moving her hand away from the pigeon, in a gesture that caused it to coo weakly in protest, too sleepy to do anything more; Sally shifted her attention away from the birdcage, looking at the maid as she slowly earned the trust of the other bird.
"...do you mind if I ask you a personal question?"
[12:58 PM] Best New Kid 🥑 | Sky: "S-sick?" Celeste whispered quietly with enlarged eyes from fear as if she could start crying, "You didn't tell me that! You just said they liked them... Oh, I almost got carried away, didn't I? Perhaps it'd be best to stick with seeds. I'm afraid once I see their cute little face and how much they love grapes, I'll end up feeding them way too many for their own good..." the maid says as she contemplates. Her face pouted, but in a sad sort of way. On way hand, she wanted to see them happy, but on the other, she was afraid the sickness could kill them, which she refused to allow to happen, especially on her own account. She supposed that she'd settle with seeing their cute faces as their mommy scritched them and tucked them in for the night.
She retracted her finger from the pigeon she had chose, noticing that she wasn't quite doing the trick Sally was... She looked into the cage longingly, jealous that she didn't have this loving touch or effect on them. It took her a few seconds to come back to earth and realize she was being addressed by Sally.
"Wha, huh?" she said in a look of sad confusion that gave enough time for her brain to recall her question, "...oh, oh, right... S-sure? I can't imagine there's too much of anything I would mind not answering."
[12:28 AM] Nerf: In the time it took for Celeste to process her question, Sally took another step away from the birdcage, taking a seat on top of her own chest as she leaned backwards against the convoy's wall. Stretching both her arms as she got comfortable in that position, her relaxed demeanor was but a practiced trick, trying to get the maid to lower her guard when it came to answering uncomfortable questions.
"You'll see, I've been wondering about this for a while, but I still can't quite figure out why you three have decided to help us. You are not getting any money out of this, nor do you seem to have a particular interest in our mission. I know traveling with an armed group can be safer than being on your own, but so far all you've accomplished by joining us is getting thrown in the middle of dangerous situations time and time again."
Playfully balancing both her legs in the air, not quite reaching the floor from her position, Sally smiled as she gave the maid an innocent look.
"Celeste, what are you running from?"
[2:48 PM] Best New Kid 🥑 | Sky: "Well Boreas said he had a vision about this group... I can't always understand what he means, but I know that being here is important. I don't know why, but i... Have faith." She said as if she was choosing her words carefully.
She sat across from Sally on the convoy floor away from the cage. She was mostly twiddling her thumbs when she heard her next question.
"It's complicated... We managed to get ourselves in trouble after trouble, so we were running around before we met you guys. Despite the danger we get in, I know that I still feel safer being in the Pack... I can't quite explain it, but that's how I feel," she said with a weak attempt of a smile as she finally looked up to Sally again.
[12:10 AM] Nerf: "You didn't answer my question."
There wasn't any accusation in Sally's tone, but rather the resigned voice of one that wasn't expecting a straight answer in the first place. Changing her expression to a more serious one, the criminal gave Celeste a reassuring nod, noticing how she was making the maid nervous.
"Still, I suppose it is my fault for asking such things. How about we move to a topic you are more comfortable with? Curious as I might be, I know it would be rude to continue prying about it."
Jumping from her seat to the convoy floor, Sally sat right next to Celeste, now at the same level as her.
"Like for example, you could tell me about how you three met. Is that something you are ok with sharing?"
[12:21 PM] Best New Kid 🥑 | Sky: "Thanks," she said as if a sigh of relief.
Her shoulders relaxed and she definitely didn't seem as tense. She wished she could explain it better, but this was as she could say for now. Her body language would likely lead the perceptive Sally to think that Celeste had endured some sort of trauma that she ordered not to look back on.
But the tension didn't quite go away. Even though Sally was trying to make it more comfortable, this question was still connected to the previous.
"Oh, I... Well three of us met..." She started, still a bit nervous, "...we were all running. We all did something... that we werent proud of... Still aren't proud of," she corrected, "and we all ended up banding together out of necessity. But after I tamed Sunshine, and after Bo fixed a broken abandoned cart... That's when we were really able to get moving," she explained with a smile and a nervous laugh as she covered her mouth and tears filled her eyes.
She leaned onto Sally and shut her eyes.
"Please understand.... We didn't mean to... We're just trying to help you guys as much as we can... If Bo didn't have that vision..." Celeste said as she was chocking back tears. It was obvious she had been holding this in for Kyria knows how long...
[1:36 PM] Nerf: The moment Celeste leaned into her, Sally decided it was time to call off her interrogation. Gently placing one of her hands behind the maid's back, she attempted to comfort her, trying her best to ignore how awkward it was to have someone she barely knew crying on her shoulder.
"Hey, hey, it's ok. You don't need to tell me if you don't want to."
As the words came out of her mouth, the criminal found herself surprised at them. Of course she needed to know! If there was truly something coming after the convoy, then the entire Pack could be in danger. And, given how Celeste had reacted to her questions, she had a very strong feeling she wasn't going to get another chance to ask her about it anytime soon.
And yet...
"Come on, you don't want to ruin my clothes, do you?" Sally forced a smile. "People are going to get weird ideas if they see us like this. And didn't you say Boreas was still awake? I don't want to see what he would do if he found out I made you cry. That guy can be kinda scary when he wants to, you know?"
[12:07 PM] Best New Kid 🥑 | Sky: "I-I'm... I'm sorry I can't... It's just better no one knows..." she said as she wiped her eyes. She tried to swallow that lump in her throat, but it wouldn't budge. She didn't mean to spill her heart out to Sally, who she'd only truly met in passing up until now, but she was the first person that had prodded that question. She just wasn't ready to share it yet, she didn't think any of the convoy would be.
Celeste let out a nervous laugh and smile, as tears still streamed down her face, albeit slower than they were.
"I'll try not to," she said about the shoulder of Sally's clothes, now soiled with tears, "Oh, don't worry about Bo. H-he knows I'm a crybaby, so he won't do anything unless I ask it of him, " she said as she was still wiping her eyes, the tears beginning to stop for the moment at least, "A-at least I think. He has a hard time understanding and expressing emotion if it's not directly stated to him. But yeah, yeah, he's definitely scary, so that being said, I'd watch what you say to me," she said with a playful, empty threat. It was accompanied by an actual laugh, not the nervous kind. Sally must know how to cheer up silly people like Celeste.
[9:53 PM] Nerf: "Hey, I can be scary too." Sally retorted as she pretended to be offended by the threat. "Maybe he should watch out what he does to me. I'll make him eat that braid of his if he tries anything funny," she joked in return, trying to lighten up the mood.
With her chance of learning anything else about whatever it was the convoy was running away from gone, Sally's attention was now in moving the conversation away from Celeste's past, into something that would hopefully help calm her down. As much as she disliked to admit it, it was evident by this point that she had made a huge judgement mistake when she decided the maid would be the best person to question about it. Now, she could only attempt to undo said mistake, and hope she'd be able to find the answers she wanted from a different source.
"By the way, Celeste, do you think you could help me think a name for a pigeon?" Sally blurted unprompted, as she pointed towards the birdcage, where the three birds were now sleeping peacefully. "These ones are quite young, so I haven't decided on anything yet. I'm sure it'd be easier if you gave me some ideas."
As she offered Celeste a kind smile, she made sure to omit the fact that she had never given names to any of her pigeons before. To be able to tell them apart from each other was one thing, sure, but when you handled such a large amount of birds at the same time, to give every single one of them names was simply too impractical to be done.
After all, if that was what it would take to cheer Celeste up, what wrong was there in such a small lie?
[1:26 PM] Best New Kid 🥑 | Sky: Celeste's face brightened and her eyes widened in excitement, like a kid in a candy shop. Her face was still streaked with tears, and her eyes still red from it all, but that was probably the best thing Sally could've asked for, and it showed in Celeste's innocent smile.
"Oh yessss! I've been pondering the names already, but I didn't want to intrude on any previous names you might've had in your head," she explained, "but shame on you, Sally," she said playfully, "it's practically a crime to have such cute little babies and not give them a name!"
She looked at the cute, sleeping birds and pointed at them as she rattled off the names, "that one should be Cloudy, that was looks like a Dusty, and that one, that one, just screams Rainy."
[10:08 PM] Nerf: "Hmm...", Sally brought a hand to her chin, playing the role of an interested audience perfectly. "I can definitely see Dusty, and Cloudy isn't half bad either. But...Rainy? Doesn't she look more like a Stormy to you? She even has the temper of one, if I may say so."
Curious to know if Celeste would insist on her suggestion or not, the criminal waited for a response.(edited)
[10:21 PM] Best New Kid 🥑 | Sky: "Hmmmmmmm" Celeste said aloud as she thought. She squinted her eyes and tilted her head back and forth a few times. Questions like these were the ones that really made Celeste do her hardest thinking.
"Y'know, I could see Stormy working for Cloudy or Dusty, but I just feel like Stormy doesn't work for Rainy. She's a lot more gentle than the other two. Though if you really like Stormy, I'd say it'd fit more to replace Dusty. He's a bit more hot-headed and a darker gray. But Cloudy has more white pigmentation in his feathers, just a teensy bit less than the others -- most people can barely tell. Not to mention he has a little white-speckles on his pink feet, but only on the bottoms of them. They're adorable when you get the chance to look at them," Celeste rattled on about he naming conventions, before shaking her head a bit and getting back on track after realizing she was veering a bit on a tangent, "But Rainy... she has that slight tint of a cool gray complexion, don't you see? And Stormy sounds too strong and angry for her type of bird. It just makes sense. Not sure of another way of explaining it... But you're ultimately their Mommy, so what do you think, Sally?"
Celeste kepted her head a bit tilted to the left as she leaned her chin onto the palm of her right hand. He eyebrows were curved upward inquizitively. Her face was still gentle, but one could probably tell that she preferred her own name choice.(edited)
[11:33 PM] Nerf: "Hey, stop right there. You can't just call them by those names when we haven't agreed on it yet. That's not fair."
While her expression was still not a serious one, it wasn't too hard to tell Celeste's long tirade about the names hadn't been very succesful in convincing Sally. She had expected the maid to be excited about the idea, sure, but she had certainly not foreseen to what degree she would be invested on it. She even had decided on the names she wanted before being asked about it!
I'm sure she would not think Stormy is gentle if she had been the one to train her. That bird's got a rebellious streak, and no one can tell me otherwise.
And still, Sally couldn't help but notice it was unusual of her to be so adamant about Celeste's suggestions. Why did she even care? Was it jealousy? Was it the fact that she did not like having someone else's opinions forced on her? Or did she simply not like the names as much as Celeste did? After all, it's not like she needed one to talk to her birds in the first place. She had always done just fine without it.
"Alright...fine", she eventually conceded to the expecting Celeste, pretending to have been swayed by her words. "We will be using your names. Cloudy, Dusty and Rainy...it's got a nice ring to it, don't you think?"
Just as quickly as it had appeared, the frown in her face was replaced by a polite smile.
"However, if you are not busy, I would also like to ask you a favour."
[10:10 PM] Best New Kid 🥑 | Sky: "Well I just went with those names because I didn't want to get confused. Nothing had to be decided yet if you don't want to..." Celeste said with a playfully gaze away with a smile of her own.
"Oh you do like them now?" Celeste asked with fake interest as she looked upon Sally yet again. "I knew they'd grow on you," the maid said with a chuckle.
"If I'm not busy? Well now that the babies are back asleep... I don't have much else to do. Whatcha thinking? I won't promise anything until I hear this favor," Celeste said with a sly, silly smirk. She was glad to get away from the previous topic, and happily rolled with this new one. The tears that streaked her face were barely noticeable now.
In her mind she was still wary though.
[11:55 PM] Nerf: "Oh, it's nothing big", Sally reassured her as she emptied the inner pockets of her cape, revealing what appeared to be a roll of fabric, a pair of needles and some thread, all carefully displayed in the wagon's floor. "You see this bag I've got here?" She pointed at the pouch that was hanging from her belt. "I've been using it to carry some stuff in battle, but I'm afraid it's starting to get a bit small for what I need. So I've been working on making a new one."
Grabbing all her stuff once again, the criminal began looking for a good place to work, not before lighting up a lantern with a simple spell. Eventually, she decided on a small table, not too far from where her chest was.
"I've already taken all measurements needed and cut the fabric, so this shouldn't take too long. I was hoping to finish it tonight", she explained.
Turning around to face Celeste, the branded woman gave the maid a teasing smirk.
"I've heard you are pretty good at sewing a wound shut, but do you think you can handle a pouch? I believe I could use an extra pair of hands"
[1:14 PM] Best New Kid 🥑 | Sky: "Hehe Al is better at actual sewing, but I can heal people with a staff pretty well," Celeste explained as she followed Sally and marveled, "nice spell."
"I'm good at helping people, I'd say, so yeah, just tell me how I can help!" Celeste says excitedly as she grabs a needle tries to thread it, only to stay herself and bleed a little.
"Tch! Little prick," she cursed at the needle before trying again. After stabbing herself accidentally a few more times, she manages to thread it. She lays it down on the nearby crate by the pouch and begins to bandage her fingers.
"Whew! Well now that the easy stuff is out of the way, let's get to it! I'll keep these bandages handy," she says with a chuckle and eager smile. One could only imagine how much she's hurt herself doing crafts if that was the easy part...
[6:41 PM] Nerf: After witnessing such an impressive display of incompetence Sally didn't need to see anything else to be able to tell Celeste should not be allowed to handle a needle, or anything that required some caution, for that matter. Taking advantage of the moment of distraction in which the maid bandaged her fingers, she quickly took the needle out of her reach, before she could continue hurting herself with it.
"Hmm, if that's case, then I will ask you to do something else", she reacted naturally, as if she hadn't even noticed the wounds on her fingers. "Just grab on here, and I will sew it together."
Folding one of the borders of the fabric over itself, the criminal held the cloth in place with the tip of her fingers, lifting it up in the air so Celeste could see how she was supposed to do it. Careful not to let go until the maid could come over and relieve her in that task, she made sure to give her some encouraging words.
"Yes, exactly like that. Make sure it doesn't move and I will take care of the rest."
[11:05 PM] Best New Kid 🥑 | Sky: "Oh, I see! That makes a lot more sense than when I tried to sew before!" Celeste said with excitement in her eyes.
"Having the cloth inside out when you sew it will make it look pretty when it's done! So that's how Al does it so pretty and lady-like. I just kind put the needle and thread whereever I thought it should. The garments looks a little tattered and messy, but it did the job right by holding everything together! And besides, I think it gave it a little charm knowing that I was wearing something that I made myself," Celeste said, almost beaming now. She kept talking and talking, while still following Sally's instructions to a tee.
"And don'tcha worry if the needle gets my fingers, I already have them bandaged so surely you couldn't have them any more worse for wear than I do!" the maid said with a chuckle, "Now c'mon, hurry, I wanna see how pretty it looks after it's finished!"
[10:13 PM] Nerf: As the only response for all this excitement, Sally simply nodded in silence, her mind too focused in the task before her to respond in any other way. The only exception to this was seen in the brief pauses after her agile fingers finished sewing something, in the moment she used to patiently respond to all of Celeste's previous questions, as well as give her her next instructions.
After a surprisingly short session of work, the fabric began taking it's desired shape, resembling a pouch more and more by each minute. By the time the two were finally finished with it, not even a quarter an hour had passed, and by the looks of it, Sally was quite satisfied with the final result.
"Yes, this will definitely work", she sentenced after using her own hand to check how spacious it was. "It's a lot bigger than the previous one."
Taking a deep, long breath, the branded woman let both of her shoulders fall, as if she had just realized how tired she was.
"Thank you, Celeste, you were a big help."
[12:25 AM] Best New Kid 🥑 | Sky: "Aww thanks! The boys usually aren't as forward and direct about my help. They just smile and nod at a good attempt. I know I'm not always the best, but I do my best! It's nice to have confirmation. The sewing work is wonderful! I'd say you'd give all run for his money if you ever contested with him. If you ever wanna help make some outfits sometime it'd probably be a lot of fun! And with your luck, it'd be prettyand have that wonderful DIY charm. But for now.. it's late at least. It's almost getting time for Al's shift at watching the cart while I sleep..." Celeste rambles as she rubs her arm nervously.
"I never know how to give a good end to these kind of conversations, so uh... Good work! And have a good night's rest! May Kyria kiss you good night and tuck you in or what have you... I just uh... Gnight!" Celeste says as she stumbles over her words and walks away from Sally with a wave. Which was odd, since didn't she sleep in the cart like all the other convoy members? Oh well, surely she knows what she's doing.
[1:49 PM] Nerf: "Good night", she returns with a chuckle, amused at Celeste's akward attempt to put an end to the conversation. "And thanks again."
And with that, she abandoned the cart, ready to get some well deserved rest after a long day of work.
[1:49 PM] Nerf: ==RP END==
