[5:04 PM] LadyDeme: This town's library was certainly interesting -- while its stock in literature was somewhat lacking, its store of magical philosophies, histories, and spellcrafting and use were intense. Seed picked up a book from its shelf, a book about light magic and self-defense. It was something he was thinking a lot more about, now...
But at the end of the day, he wasn't very comfortable hurting people. While he understood how to use light magic, he wasn't comfortable with his ability to do so with minimal harm, or quickly -- and so he added it to another book on the topic of spell-alteration that he thought profitable. Also, a history book. And a slim volume of prose poetry he hadn't seen before. He thought he was being very restrained, as he began heading towards the front desk with his selections. Yes, restrained.
It was a fairly busy time in the library, with people going to and fro, their footsteps breaking the silence -- since people often penned and read tomes to follow in the footsteps of Alaro, on a sunny morning like this, the library often saw people come to get something to study on the hill; Seed chuckled as he watched them, though he was happy to admit he intended to do a little writing there himself.
[8:11 PM] Fluffy cyber: "zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"
Millie snored with her face planted in Kiko's belly, her moth open in a crooked smile. Her hair was messy, no longer held into place by the bow that usually lived there. Surrounding her was 3-4 towers of books, along with an equal amount of half finished notebooks. The topic of the books ranged from Glyphing, enchanting, casting magic without tomes, casting magic with other types of medium, a few sheets of mudic and even Pallo. Her hand still held a half worn pencil, and scattered around the table were a bunch of used up pencils as well. A few of her notebooks had the same drawing of a large, single edged broadsword, each with a different set of enchantments layered over it.(edited)
[5:34 PM] LadyDeme: Seed heard the snore coming from the tower; much of the library did, as a matter of fact. But Seed was the one who elected to come closer to the sound of snores and peer over the towers of books and the rising form of a stuffed whale.
How charming, he thought, without a trace of sarcasm. Well, this is certainly unusual. He leaned further forward, leveraging his height and tapped gently at the top of the table, a wood-on-wood tapping that resonated up his bad arm oddly when it the dirt-filled hollow.
"Millie," he whispered. "Millie, you've fallen asleep in the library."
[6:27 PM] Fluffy cyber: Tonk tonk tonk
Millie shifted her head a but didn't wake up. Everything was so comfortable and peaceful, and she didn't want to leave it. In her dream she imagined herself drowning in a pile of fluffy sea turtles. Happy fluffy sea turtles that were giving her unlimited hugs.
"Millie, you've fallen asleep in the library."
Millie gently shook her head and inched away from the knocking subconciously.
"Nohhh. Dun wanna."
Right now she didn't want to act mature. She didn;t care if she was already 19, she just wanted to keep playing with the sea turtles. the big, fluffy, happy sea turtles. Life was so much better in the dream world.
[7:27 PM] LadyDeme: "Unfortunately, you must," he insisted, now giving her arm a small tap or two, more cautiously than his words would suggest. He wasn't going to mention the snoring; beorc didn't seem to like it when you observed their precious little sleep-sounds they made.
"This is a library, not a bedroom, so you must wake up, Millie."
[9:00 PM] Fluffy cyber: Now this hug, it wasn't as fluffy. In fact, it felt kind of wooden. That was weird, sea turtles weren't wooden.
"This is a library, not a bedroom, so you must wake up, Millie."
Library? She was in a library? What library? Sea turtles didn't live in libraries.
Millie jolted awake and sat up, quickly wiping the drool from her mouth in embarrasment.
"Awawawa ah I uh"
Millie waved her hands and tried to explain what she was doing.
"IwasjuststudyingandigotabitsleepyandthenextthingiknewI-"
Millie stopped her jumble of words when she realized she was in the library, and she was being loud. One of the librarians looked st her sourly, and she clamped her hands between her knees and blushed heavily.
"Sorry," She managed to squeak out.
Now that her face was off the table there was another notebook that could be seen. this one had a series of repeated sentences, except these were in Pallo. Now free of Millie's grasp, Kiko sat to the side on his back, with a depression the size of Millie's face on his belly. And always, his smile was as bright as the morning sun.
[6:14 PM] LadyDeme: Seed restrained a chuckle, partially out of respect for her dignity and partially out of respect for the library's need for a little quiet. He patted Kiko's belly, surprised at the soft's plushness for a moment before turning back.
"I like your friend,"
he gave it a good-tempered nod. Looking over her exposed notes, he could see the pallo written out, repeating over and over down the page. He tilted his head for a moment -- he couldn't immediately say it was her handwriting, after all, but it didn't seem like the writing of someone intimately familiar with the script.
"Are you studying the language, perchance?"
[8:28 PM] Fluffy cyber: Millie shuddered a little as Seed gave Kiko a pat, but didn't move to stop him. She supposed it would be ok, since Seed eas a nice person. As soon as Seed removed his hand she pulled Kiko into her lap.
"Are you studying the language, perchance?"
Millie nodded. Her cheeks reddened from both Kiko's exposure and her messy notes, and she tilted her head down instinctively.
"A lot of books here were in Pallo so I couldn't read them. I didn't want to use the dictionary again and there were a couple good books that helped so I, uh...."
She both wanted to proudly show him her progress and hide the fact she had only managed to write and read a few sentences. It was completely different from Milo, and it felt like she had to forget Milo to really speak it.
"It's kind of difficult..."
[4:42 PM] LadyDeme: "Ah, I see. I could likely give you some small aid, if you'd like," He offered, pulling up a chair on the other side of the table and setting down upon it his own smaller stack of books -- the sunny morning could wait, after all.
"How thorough an understanding do you have so far -- you've clearly been able to study it to a point, and frankly, being able to read it with the aid of a dictionary is fairly impressive by itself, given the grammar," he said. He steepled his fingers over the table. He also had the opportunity to ready his own writing supplies, spreading out his old notebook to a fresh pair of pages, his inkwell, and a pen.
[4:31 PM] Fluffy cyber: "I can sorta read a few words, but the more complicated ones still need the dictionary. The grammar I still don't mostly understand besides basic verbs, nouns and adjectives."
She pushed the notebook with the repeated sentences towards seed. A few of the words were written funnily but for the most part Millie was sure they were correct.
(Hello. My name is Millie. Nice to meet you.)
(Hello. My name is Millie. Mice to meet you.)
(Helio. My neme is Millie. Nice to meet you.)
(Hello. My name is Millie. Nice to meet you.)
"I also tried to memorize a few useful sentences but not that many"
[4:56 PM] LadyDeme: "I see. Your meaning on these is good, but your script is still a little shaky...But that's a matter of practice. That said, I'm not sure how much a sentence like that would be useful with writing practice, to be honest. It's a phrase you're much more likely to say. I'd like to hear your pronunciations."
He tapped his finger to his chin, dwelling on how to introduce some of the functions as to how the differences worked.
"You likely, encountering it, notice that sometimes it seems like adjectives and adverbs are placed strangely, correct? Pallo doesn't give the same regard for word order to lend its words meaning the way Milo does -- and where it does, it would often do so differently, or for emphasis. I will say, it makes finding a rhyme incredibly easy. What the words do to tell you how to construct the ideas is transform, with words with matching inflections are connected ideologically."(edited)
[5:12 PM] Fluffy cyber: "Adverbs...Placed strangely...rhyming..."
All these rules began swimming around her head and she tried her best to keep track of them. She did agree that sometimes connecting an adjective to a noun was pretty difficult, and sometimes it felt like there wasn't any rules and in most cases just arbitrary placements.
"Speaking is a bit difficult for me to do though, since there wasn't anyone to speak to."
She picked up her pen and flicked it off her thumb. A habit that had followed her from her schooldays in Rettati.
"And I feel like I'm pronouncing everything wrong."
[5:44 PM] LadyDeme: "That's why I'm asking now -- you can speak to me, of course," he said, with a simple smile, spreading his hands. He clearly had some enthusiasm for the idea. He glanced down at the notebook and considered her lessons... And then his eyes fell around them, to the crowd of library patrons, in the soft backdrop of the library.
"...Though perhaps not in a library. Would you like to walk as we talk? ..." With a teasing smile, he added, "It might help with the drowsiness, as well."
[8:40 PM] Fluffy cyber: Millie pouted at Seed's jab but agreed. Within minutes she had managed to stuff all her notebooks and Kiko into her duffle bag and wrangle the book towers back to where they belonged. Fortunately, this library had a return cart so she didn't need to put them back individually.
---
Millie and Seed strolled around Wizard's Point, enjoying the comfortably cool weather. Unlike Maufi, the hilltop city was much less lively, with only a few other individuals minding their own business.
"Ummm, (How wus your day?)"
Millie tried out a sentence nervously. She was still trying to pronounce words right, since some sounds weren't really found in Milo.
"Did i do that right?"
[9:05 PM] LadyDeme: Seed ambled along, for a moment taking in the atmosphere or the cool air and the sun baking the cobbled roads, rather than focusing on his companion, until she offered up her attempt. Then he smiled smoothly and gave a little nod.
"(My day was good,)" he answered, with a bit of careful enunciation. He gently inclined his head and added, "However, you need to watch that vowel. (was,) (was). It was mostly very good, though."
[10:17 PM] Fluffy cyber: "(Wus, wus, was, was)"
Millie sounded the vowel under her breath, making sure it sounded like the way Seed said it. She was pretty sure it was correct now.
"(How was your day?)"
She looked at seed expectantly as she asked. For some reason she felt afraid of disappointing Seed. Even if miniscule, the thought of failure induced a slight bit of anxiety.(edited)
[3:24 PM] LadyDeme: Seed beamed at the corrected question, giving it a gracious nod that sent his crown of leaves rustling about his head. He weighed his possible answers, and elected to simplify his initial response, to make the conversation a little easier for her to follow and keep up. After a moment's thought, he went simply with,
"(Very good!)" And then an incline of his head a brief, airy gesture to the universe, "That was to both your question and your pronunciation. (And yours?)"
[1:52 PM] Fluffy cyber: "(I had a day...uh...good?)"
Millie tried her best to remember the right order, and scrunched her face in effort. Seed was right, adjective placement was difficult.
"No, (I had a good...day?)"
She wasn't entirely sure, but she was pretty sure it was the second.
[3:24 PM] LadyDeme: "The second," Seed confirmed with another nod. He glanced about for another lesson in basic grammar, and spotted a stranger walking about that way on the street and gestured towards him. "Now, you've likely encountered this already, but to walk is (to walk), in the infinitive. In the present simple, if we were to look at this man, (he walks.) Though you could also translate that as 'he is walking,' those are different tenses."
The man gave them a slightly odd look, but Seed pressed on.
"We could say, if we wanted to reflect on this moment, but without implying that the man finished his stroll, we would use the imperfect, (he was walking). If we wanted to suggest that he did finish, it would be the perfect, (He walked). If we wanted to suggest he had done this before he did another perfect-tense thing, we'd use the pluperfect, (he had walked). That one's a bit tricky to explain -- but the translation would be easy, as in 'He had walked to the store before he bought something.'.. There are a few other tenses, and if we wanted to say we were walking, it'd be a bit different, but how are you doing?"
He asked, tilting his head with a concerned look in his eyes.(edited)
[1:06 AM] Fluffy cyber: "How am I doing?"
Millie wasn't sure if it was a quation about her current state or Pallo.
"(My is,) er (am good. My day am good)"
She answered a bit more confidently. She wasn't struggling all that much with the pallo, although she would have to practice more later.
"(How are you?)"
[9:00 AM] LadyDeme: "About keeping track of what I'm telling you, I mean. As for your answer... Your verb's person doesn't agree with your subject. (My day is good), (I am good.) You must have one or the other, and it should align with the rest of your choices." He explained, citing the differences.
"(I am good, thank you. We are both good,)" He answered. "Are there any other things you have particular difficulty with? If I know, we can work it into the conversation."
[8:01 PM] Fluffy cyber: "Ummm."
Millie scrarched her head as she tried to take in everything Seed had taught her so far.
"I think the hardest part for me right now is verb placement. I don't feel that confident in that."
[8:46 AM] LadyDeme: Seed paused for a minute, trying to explain in his head first that the two languages out and out handled the questions of word order differently, on such a fundamental level; eventually, he nodded.
"Don't worry about placement; I really meant that, earlier. You can easily shove it at the end of sentences, and nothing about the meaning changes; as a result, writers put the phase where it sounds best or has the emphasis on the most important words, so it looks inconsistent. The important thing is conjugation. The word is transformed, and that tells you the way it connects. We all change, when we connect to something. (We walk), (He walks), (I walk), (you walk). The verb in each one is a little different."
[12:46 PM] Fluffy cyber: "Then..."
Millie puffed her cheeks in effort. She still felt afraid of failure, and even if it seemed easy she didn't want to make a mistake.
"(My day is good. We are having a nice walk.)"
It sounded right. It felt right. It should be right. Right?
[5:19 PM] LadyDeme: "Very good!" Seed said, with an honest applause, speaking brightly. Compared to his normally placid demeanor, it seemed like the Florkana was having a lot of fun, just walking along, his leaves absorbing bright summer sunlight through a cloudless sky, sharing language with someone.
"(The sun is out, and so I am happy today. I want to read under the tree.)"
[5:50 PM] Fluffy cyber: Mille beamed at Seed's happiness. She was glad she got it right.
"Then...(If the sun is out? Why sit in the shade?)"
She was growing more confident in her Pallo. The way Seed explained the rules made much more sense to her than the books did. As they stolled through Wizard's Point the pair continued to converse in Pallo. For the first time in a very long while, Millie felt like the world was a peaceful place again.
[5:58 PM] Fluffy cyber: === RP END ===
