"Sparks of Progress"

Cast: Millie (Cyber) and Boreas (Sky)

TLDR: After Millie struggles to to glyph and end up burning her notebook to a crisp, Boreas does some weird magic to read its contents before it's too late. She then continues to struggle before successfully (though not correct or well, mind you) glyphing. Boreas watches and speaks minimally. Then once it's Boreas' turn to steer the convoy for the night, he replaces Alistair at the reigns and Millie hops off to join the rest of the pack on foot.

[9:49 PM] Cyber the Unchangeble: === THIS IS MINE. MY PLACEHOLDER. NO TOUCHY ===
[11:56 PM] Cyber the Unchangeble: Millie let the dull clop of the convoy horse numb her brain. She sat in the back of the convoy, her arms folded over the back end of the cart, and rested her chin against the soft flesh of her forarm. Ugh..... Millie groaned. Zain hadn't told them where they were going, and there wasn't anything to really do. Her wounds from the battle still throbbed, and her hair was a mess. Her clothing was covered in blood and grime, and she had a stomache from the fizzy water. "This suuuuuuuuuuucks..." Millie complained loudly to no one in particular. The clouds of dust and sounds of the horse drowned her out, and not even Kyria herself could care less. "Cluck cluck!" Horush hopped up from behind her and perched a crate next to Millie. "Buck-Bawk!" With lightning fast speed the hen struck Millie's head with her beak, managing to flutter away before Millie could catch her. This had become the chicken's new favorite pastime, and she had gotten quite good at it. I should have just eaten you and used your feathers to fix that poor sheep. She glowered at the chicken, who was now devouring an enourmous tomato, whole. She had named her Horush, after the phoenix constellation that appeared during the summer, despite the fact Horush was supposed to be a male bird. Clop The sounds of travel numbed Millie's head again. and she returned to her orginal position. Clop clop clop Millie's right eye twitched. Although Seed's healing had probably saved her from death, her side still throbbed, and the jostling wasn't helping. Clopclopclopclopclop Millie flopped backwards, slamming her head into Kiko the whale, who bulged out of her pack. Her stuff was a mess. Swords, knives, clothing and other stuff was strewn everywhere. She'd have to clean it up later. Stupid chicken, stupid dust. Stupid- Suddenly, Horush hopped on to Millie's lap, her head held up proudly as if she had just slain a giant.(edited)

[12:12 AM] Cyber the Unchangeble: "You little-" Millie reached to swipe the hen but stopped. Although Horush was an occasional nuisance, she eas still quite attached to her. With a heavy sigh, she gave the hen a scratch and placed her back into her makeshift nest. I might as well clean up my stuff. She turned around and began stuffing everything into a singular crate marked "Adriana Millie" I used to have alot of stuff. I guess it's all back home now... As she stared at the old crate Millie reminded herself just how much her life had changed. She could count her possessions on her fingers. 2 swords, some clothing, Kiko, a damaged Dolly, a couple sets of clothing and her stilleto. It barely filled up the crate. Millie picked up the thin dagger and stared at it. The star steel blade glimmered under the full moons. Not yet I suppose. She sheathed in her leg strap under her skirt. She had forged the blade after she had left Rettati, even though her father had told her to sell the star steel for Leafs.(edited)
[12:18 AM] Cyber the Unchangeble: She continued unpack her stuff, taking Kiko and plopping him in her lap. From her nest, Horush looked at the whale enviously, and grumpily ruffled her feathers. At the bottom of her bag she found her notebook. It was rsther best up, with multiple pages ripped, the edges frayed and a large portion of it was damaged from the water. Taking a quick look at it, it was mostly just junk such as random doodles and a few embarrassing daydreams. But what interested her the most was her notes on Glyphing that Seed had helped her translate. "This could be useful." She quickly grabbed her iron spellsword and a glyph. The indeterminate msss of energy glowed, and seemed to radiate *SPECTACLE**. So if I just... She poked the blade with the glyph with the blade, but it just bent itself like any other piece of string.
[12:24 AM] Cyber the Unchangeble: Maybe...? Millie flexed her arm and pushed a bit of mana into the blade, coercing the glyph inside. It reached forward, tentatively, like a cautious mouse offered a bit of cheese. "Cmon." As soon as the glyph touched the blade it recoiled, back sending sparks into the air. Millie growled, and forced more mana into the sword. Bzzt bzzt But the glyphs still refused to enter, sending a couple more sparks into the air. Millie channled all her magic, forcing the glyph inside. BAM
[1:28 AM] Best Tamberlane Doggo🥑 | Sky: The clopclop of their horse, Sunshine, echoed in the night air. The night was clear under the light of the moon, Luna, and their twins, Selena and Nox. Celeste was fast asleep, tucked in and cuddled up in a blanket, nice and cozy. Almost nothing could ever really awake her. Alistair was at the reins, accommodating Sunshine's nocturnal energy. He was a strong horse, and on some nights periodically, he won't be able to truly rest until all of the energy is used up. He was truly the perfect workhorse for certain. It was almost a shame that his duty was bound to pulling the caravan of the ABC Convoy, but if you asked Celeste, she'd likely tell you that he wouldn't choose anything else to occupy his happiness. He was strong enough to lead and carry them and their belongings without having to be involved in much battles. Despite his giant, all-black exterior, he was a sweetheart that hated fighting. He was just happy to help the ragtag group on their journey. And as long as he had Celeste especially, he couldn't truly ever be unhappy. But Boreas on the other hand, he had just awoke about 20 minutes ago, as was his routine. He claimed to have the perfect sleep schedule hammered out with the most efficient use of his body's internal clock so to speak. Daily, with various times throughout the day, he'll sleep for 2 hours, accompanied by 3 30 minute naps. The rest of his time, he uses perfectly as he sees fit, whether that be working on spells, curses, fortune telling, or even tinkering with runes and glyphs and the like. Or even doing choosing to do nothing at all. He was a rather odd fellow to say the least, who often seemed to have a lack of interest in many things, always wearing the straightest of poker faces which could never quite be shaken off, paired with a monotone voice and eyes that always had a slight doopyness. And a large hooded cloak to cover everything else about him, save for his pale, blank face, simple, black-rimmed glasses, and a long pink braid.(edited)
[1:31 AM] Best Tamberlane Doggo🥑 | Sky: But now, in the middle of the night, Boreas sat in absolute silence and watched as one of the new girls worked her way at trying to figure out how glyphs were used.... and failing miserably. The sparks that flew back and the little buzzing he could hear. If she wasn't careful, he was certain she could start a fire or something with all that stray magic flying about every which way. They could all die a fiery death right then and there, under the moons' light. In an instant, all the Pack's hard work and valuables, lost to the flames on this beautiful night... done by a single, small, little girl as she. He found the thought amusing, and gave the slightest of chuckles. "...heh..." he said with the deepest of voices, almost spoken as a gasp, or perhaps a strange hiccup or yawn. Such noises wouldn't mean much at this time of night. Boreas watched for a few minutes more until she had succeeded...! "...heh," he had said again before actually speaking, "all wrong," he corrected her simply, "must like doing things the most difficult of ways."
[3:23 AM] Cyber the Unchangeble: Millie knew one of the convoy drivers was watching. She could tell that he knew that Millie was doing it wrong, but she wanted to prove him otherwise. It wasn't like it was condescending, but more of a apathetical prediction. She wondered if he would care if the whole convoy burst in flames. BZAAP "Eep!" Suddenly a flash of spark zapped her sleeve, singing the edges. She waved it around in a panic and looked around for water until she realized that it wasn't actually on fire.
[3:28 AM] Cyber the Unchangeble: "All wrong, must like doing things the most difficult of ways." The driver shook his head. What did this guy know about glyphing? As far as Millie knew she just gave her weapons to Zain and they came back glyphed. "Uuuuuuuuuuuu" Millie stiffened her arms and puffed her cheeks in frustration. She could figure it out herself, even if the mysterious driver did know how to do it. Besides, she had the notes from Seed. That was enough right? She took out the notebook and consulted the scribblings once again. Whether it was from the lack of sleep or the dim lighting she couldn't make heads or tails out of it. Still stubbornly refusing to ask, she went back to doing what she doing before, managing to singe herself again a few times. Laugh all you want, but by the time I'm done I'll be the best glypher you've ever seen! She grumpily stared at the iron sword and the glyph. Why wouldn't they work? It should be like any other enchantment, so why was it refusing to fuse?(edited)
[3:33 AM] Cyber the Unchangeble: Bzzt Another spark of electricity arced from the blade, this time setting fire to the notebook. "No!" Millie tried to stamp out the fire with a jacket but the damage was done. Half of each page was blackened and shriveled, now unreadable regardless of fatigue and lighting. "Stupid!" Millie angrily chucked the glyph into the crate and tucked herself in the corner of the cart, her eyes tearing up in frustration. Stupid glyphing, she didn't need it anyways. Millie turned her head away and tried to conceal her sobbing, hugging her knees for comfort. No one liked you anyways you stupid glyph.

[10:22 AM] Best Tamberlane Doggo🥑 | Sky: "You're wasting time, hand it over," Boreas said eerily as he gestured towards the notebook and leaned over to his right side to grab a potion of ...some liquid? His face and tone of voice made it look as if he couldn't care less what was happening, as if he anticipated her efforts to fail. But truth was, he was actually intrigued by her and how close she was. Well, it wasn't really close at all, but the average person couldn't even do as much as she just did. It was just odd to him, her being young, yet having the potential that she does, something a Beorc twice her age could only dream of having. This intrigue and supposed care about her conflicted with him on the surface level, but what he actually said and his actions spoke a bit of truth. Was he... trying to help her? "Deaf, are we? Heh, come on, I foresee a future... not yet passed," he tried to explain, "... there's still time," he begged with his monotone.(edited)
[12:41 PM] Cyber the Unchangeble: Millie used hee foot to nudge the crate with the glyph and sword towards the driver before curling herself back into the corner. Mumble Mumble Why does this guy want the glyph? Was he going to show off? To mock her? What did he mean by future? Time for what? "Is there a time limit?" Despite the monotone the driver made it seem like something was urgent. Did she break the glyph? What was the potion for? All these questions floated around in her head, and despite her exaggerated grumpiness Millie slightly raised her head in curiosity, her little now twitching like rabbit ears. Maybe if he Glyphs it I can copy how he does it
[3:05 PM] Best Tamberlane Doggo🥑 | Sky: "The notebook," he corrected with a blank stare, "Figures a Thunder would jump to such a conclusion of confusion," he remarked. "Hurry now." He took the glyph regardless and rolled it around in his hand, feeling the slight bumps and curves.(edited)
[3:32 PM] Cyber the Unchangeble: Millie also nudged the charred notebook over, but this time she scooted closer to watch. Could this guy repair it? If he could it would be really helpful. She sniffled, and pulled Kiko from her bag and gave him a hug. She didn't care what the driver thought at this point, she probably already looked like a fool.(edited)
[5:15 PM] Best Tamberlane Doggo🥑 | Sky: Boreas nodded and took the notebook within his grasp. "Calm yourself," he commanded Millie as he took a deep breath and created a ball of dark energy between his hands. His rosy pink eyes glowed a deep purple, almost a black color, which matched the energy floating between his palms. The glyph was placed in the energy and it disintegrated in the process, intermingling within the energy, making it go through a color shift of all the colors of the rainbow in a matter of seconds before returning to its original color. He then poured the liquid from potion vile onto the notebook, soaking it and the ashes that it once was. He used the magic energy to contain the power of the glyph and the ashes and wet paper from the notebook, which now glowed the very same color as the magic and his eyes. Still using one hand on the glowing notebook, he used his other one to hand Millie a new notebook and a pen from within a pocket on his cloak. "Heh, let's hope you make for a good scribe," he commented while maintaining his blank-faced composure, "Must keep focus," he tried to explain, as if why he couldn't do so himself. As soon as they were within her grasp, barely having enough time to write, Boreas ran a finger across where the words were once written and began reciting the recently-lost words of her notebook turned to ash. The ashes were assembled back to resemble intact pages of the book, but they remained their black color, the words impossible to read. Yet somehow there Boreas was, reciting them as if he could read them, as if the notebook hadn't burned at all. Though the normal person would likely be too frightened to touch it, out of fear of breaking this temporary form, only stable and bound by the magic.
[6:50 PM] Cyber the Unchangeble: Millie snapped out of her childish tantrum and began scribbling down her notes in the notebook again. They sounded more or less the same as what she had before, and soon she had began to fill up the new notebook again. She was mostly able to keep up with Boreas, but there were still some things she missed. I didn't know you could fix burned notebooks like this Millie's respect for the driver had increased qutie a bit because of this. Never had she heard of anything that could bring back a notebook from a burned state. Could it bring other things back too?
April 28, 2018
[1:32 AM] Best Tamberlane Doggo🥑 | Sky: After perhaps 20 minutes of this rewriting of the ashed notebook's contents, it was complete. Boreas gave another nod. "Not too bad," he admitted with a sigh. His eyes soon lost their glow, as did the notebook, Boreas' magic and dark aura dissipating into the night air, and with it, the notebook's singed parts fell apart again, back into ashes and blew away in the wind, the soaked notebook leaving a mess on the caravan wood flooring where it had been. Boreas slouched back and closed his eyes for a moment and breathed deeply. It seemed like this whole process was rather tiring. And it seemed like the outcome of the book was final, now that his magic had run its course to intervene while it still could.(edited)
[2:13 AM] Cyber the Unchangeble: Millie finished off the last notes and set down her pencil. Her hand throbbed from the speed of writing but she felt satisfied that it had worked. This driver really knew some crazy things. "Who are you?" At this point any annoyance for the driver had faded. This man and his magic quite intrigued her, and she felt a kindling sense of respect for the man. "And how did you do that?" A deep part of her didn't trust the potion. It almost felt evil, but since it allowed to replace the notebook it couldn't be that bad right?
[12:26 PM] Best Tamberlane Doggo🥑 | Sky: "Boreas," he answered simply without so much as opening his eyes. He sat for some moments in silence before opening his eyes, but only real halfway, it seemed. It was rather strange to say the least. It was like none of this even phased him. "With magic," he answered again, "heh, I didn't think that needed explaining, you were right there." With his monotone and unmoving face, it was virtually impossible to tell if he was being sarcastic or serious. Though he was probably being a smartass(edited)
[4:24 PM] Cyber the Unchangeble: Maybe he doesn't know himself? Millie awkwardly hid behind her finished notebook and stared at the pile of ashes. "Thanks...I guess." The awkward silence felt thick and heavy, like swimming in an ocean of syrup. The sound of bugs chirping in distance seemed to echo with the sound of the horse and the cart. Everything seemed so peaceful now that it was over. "I'm...Millie. Nice to meet you." Her notes did not say that a glyph could be used like that at all. Almost all of them said they could only be used to imbue equipment and for the most part only for basic effects as well. She wondered where he was from, and why he was part of the convoy drivers. But it wasn't her right to ask, so she continued to fidget awkwardly from where she sat.(edited)
[11:48 PM] Best Tamberlane Doggo🥑 | Sky: Had Alistair not been used to Boreas' nightly tinkering and experimenting, and Celeste not a severely heavy sleeper, he would've said something to him to quiet down or somesuch. But this wasn't the case. Truth be told, he'd only be concerned if he couldn't hear or see any glowing lights behind him from Boreas. So he left him be and questioned nothing, for now. "Heh, likewise," the shaman replied. He was almost expecting her to drill him with more questions, but she hadn't and he was okay with that. Though he'd be okay with answering questions too. Either was just kinda whatever to him. Boreas continued to sit in silence, he was happy to. He wasn't really one for much small talk, and quite frankly he found it intriguing to watch how people squirm with awkward silence, especially this girl, who he was already intrigued with in particular because of her glyphs. He was torn between this intrigues, but finally chose the later, and broke his silence. "So why glyphs?" he asked. He would've asked about he contents of the notebook, but he was already aware of them, having read it out loud in its entirety. He was intrigued by her interest in them to say the least. He felt bored with them, as they were just simple globs of energy to him, nothing too exciting, though that might just be due to his expertise. But he had his fun doing what he did with the notebook, so he thought he'd ask a more boring question and amuse her.
April 29, 2018
[12:44 AM] Cyber the Unchangeble: "Oh that uh..." She looked at her notebook as if it had appeared out of nowhere and handed it to Boreas. She usually didn't like sharing her notes but since Boreas had just read it all aloud he would have seen it all anyways. "I used to work as a spellblade forger in Niciri. I didn't learn about glyphing before Ignatius fury told me so I got curious. " She still had another glyph that she hadn't used yet. Unlike the last, this one felt a lot more mellow. Oneness "Are you the guy that does all the glyphing for The Pack?" She supposed it did make sense. No one else seemed to be that experienced with them, and this guy just fixed a notebook with a random glyph and a bottle of white stuff.
[1:16 AM] Best Tamberlane Doggo🥑 | Sky: "Surprised they didn't teach you in Niciri. Lousy forgers. Least Ignatius knows," he admitted with a slight nod. "And yes, that'd be me. It's a boring job, but it's interesting to see people's creativity and eagerness. Sometimes they bring me interesting glyphs too. It's always fun to experiment. Every glyph is different: a different feel, a different texture, a different energy. Just like people. Aura tells you a lot about both of them, and just about anything else, too," he tried to explain. While his face and voice wouldn't show it, the way he talked almost made it sound like he was exciting and gushing about the experiences since he was usually a man of few words.(edited)
[3:42 AM] Cyber the Unchangeble: Millie's eyes sparkled as Boreas began rambling about the glyphs. She wanted to know more, see more, feel more. She wanted to roll herself in an endless pile of glyphs. "How hard is it to glyph?" Millie wanted to know how to do it. She wanted to be able to glyph her own weapons. She wanted to be better than Boreas. She wanted to be the best glypher in the world. "Can you teach me?"
[10:05 PM] Best Tamberlane Doggo🥑 | Sky: "Virtually impossible. Heh heh," he answered her first question with the slightest of grins and some emphasis on the word 'virtually' -- at least as much of emphasis as a man like Boreas could put emphasis on a word in the first place, given his monotone. It was like he was proud of being one of the people in that sliver of possibility. "Can't," he said again to her second question. "Glyphing isn't taught. It's just something you can or can't do. It's like whistling. I can tell you how I can do it, but that doesn't really help you much. Just have to keep doing it until something clicks right," he tried to explain.
[10:53 PM] Cyber the Unchangeble: Millie pouted, and the handkerchief in her hair dropped along with her mood. She grumpily gathered her belongings and put them back in the crate. "I guess I'll just keep trying by myself. I'll tell you if anything else starts burning." She turned her back to Boreas dejectedly and went back to sparking another glyph against the sword. It almost seemed like she was trying to make more sparks this time, sending embers flying off like steel against a flint grindstone. April 30, 2018
[9:28 AM] Best Tamberlane Doggo🥑 | Sky: "No need, I'll see it, heh" Boreas said creepily, like he didn't really care if they were set ablaze. He was intrigued if she could even do it, so he's watch her try. He was going to offer her tips or perhaps show a demonstration, but if this is how fate fell, he'd let it happen and watch as a bystander as always. He usually didn't try to intervene, contrary to what he did with the notebook earlier.
[4:02 PM] Cyber the Unchangeble: BZZT Millie let the last spark fly before inspecting the sword again. It still looked the same, except for a few extra scorch marks. Nothing in the convoy had caught fire so far, but the air with filled with a singed smell. Not going to work huh? Millie recalled what Boreas did with the first glyph and the dark ball of energy. She flexed her own finger, and tried to form her magic into something similar. Cmon She felt the magic pool at her fingertips, but struggled to shape it. She stuck her tongue out in exertion, but the best she could do was a lopsided glob. Taking the glyph, she placed the glyph in the energy glob. "Yesh!" Tongue still extended she manages to merge the glyph and the blob. For a second, Millie thought she had succeeded. The glyph absorbed the energy and glowed for a second. Blurble The glyph shuddered, and then regurgitated the mana on Millie's lap before flopping out of her hand. Millie frowned. She wasn't a mage, so it wasn't surprising that forming free floating energy would be hard. But what if...? Once again she picks up the glyph, but this time she doesn't use the sword. Instead, she forces magical energy directly into the glyph, causing it to glow. Once again, she allowed it to come into contact with the sword, but turned her head away just incase something bad happened.
May 1, 2018
[12:21 AM] Best Tamberlane Doggo🥑 | Sky: Boreas watched intently with eyebrows slightly raised. After she changed her tactic and attempted to use magic energy, he could tell she was on the right track at least. He was very intrigued what she'd do next. Then it happened. She had managed to fuse the glyph and sword with her magic! ...Kinda. "Good job," Boreas said to Millie, "I guess technically you fused them. Not correct or well, but you did it." Millie had managed to use the glyph and fuse it into the sword, but that was only the tip of the iceberg when it came to successfully glyphing. She only had managed to fuse the glyph and alter the appearance of a small little circle area of the sword. The glyph's energy was only concentrated to that one part of the sword instead of spread throughout evenly so as to change it's overall usefulness in a meaningful way. Sure, she was successful in one sense, but the sword was virtually unchanged in the grand scheme of things, pretty much just discolored in that one area, for all intents a purposes. "You've a lot to learn," Boreas added with a slight grin and a slow clap. "Most Beorc twice your age -- hell, even thrice your age -- could only dream of having that much innate talent for what you did. It's meaningless and worthless at your level, but you should be proud to be at that level at all."(edited)
[2:32 AM] Cyber the Unchangeble: Millie eyed the discolored splotch with a bit of excitement. Even if it was useless, she had done it. She jumped up in excitement and held her blade up in the air, hero style. "Yes! I di-" The convoy bumped itself over a large rock and Millie fell to the floor again, rubbing her rump gingerly. Not dissuaded by the fall she reaches into her crate for another glyph to try. However, the only ting in her crate to greet her was Kiko. Millie had ran out of glyphs. She stifled a groan and returned back to her seat dejectedly. She would have to buy more when they reached their destination. "How long till we get there?"
[5:45 AM] Best Tamberlane Doggo🥑 | Sky: "Dunno. Doesn't make a difference, does it?" Boreas asked. "A few days, actually, if you must know," Alistair said from the reigns, eavesdropping this entire time,"Wizards Point isn't the closest of places from here, quite the contrary. And I believe it's almost time for you take over, Bo. It'll be dawn soon enough. You know how I can sleep in the daylight," he said with a yawn. "Right. My turn til Celeste awakes," Boreas says as he stands up and behind to switch places with Alistair. Sunshine however was still going strong.(edited)
[1:32 PM] Cyber the Unchangeble: Millie's bow wilted like a flower, and she grumpily tossed the sword back into her crate. She didn't want to wait a few days till she could try again, she wanted to do it now. Now out of things to do, she grumpily curls up into a ball again and scribbles down more notes into her notebook. Hopefully Zain won't notice me hiding in the cart. As she flipped through the notebook she found a particular note that stood out. She opened her mouth to ask Boreas but paused. Did she really want to ask him? Was it worth it? Alistair would hear anyways. She tosses the notebook back into the crate and makes one last check at the convoy. Fortunately, no one had noticed the excessive sparking from the glyphing. Feeling like she just stole something valuable Millie hopped out of the cart and pretended she had been walking all this time.
[1:32 PM] Cyber the Unchangeble: === RP END ===
