"The one with the angel guy Fel and the thief lady Sally at The Gates of Hell"

Cast: Lucifel (Dea) & Sally (Nerf)

TLDR: Old friends meet again and they chat, about a lot of stuff, really, mostly gathering information and the like. Lucifel explains his pocketbook and his informants that write in others instantaneously with some magic. Both of them joke about killing each other and ruining each other. They end by leaving the restaurant together.

[9:03 PM] Deallocate | Hackerman 2.0: The Gates of Hell. By far Pachima's most luxurious restaurant, situated on the northern side of the small town. Were you an individual of higher standing, you would undoubtedly be familiar with the crimson walls and sultry lighting. At the rear of the establishment, a classily dressed woman sings many a slow song of lost love, and the frailty of life. As a whole, the room exudes an ostentatious and almost soporific atmosphere, broken only by the burbles of conversation and occasional soft laugh. Despite calling itself a 'restaurant', it can't be said that the primary audience actually eats there, no. In this day and time, any noble capable of affording such a thing is more than capable of affording their own chefs, after all. No, the Gates of Hell serve as a meeting place for businessmen and criminals who need an isolated, yet classy place to conduct business. Pachima is the natural location for such an establishment, as it's small enough so as not to attract unwanted attention, yet close enough to a major port city to be convenient for travelers. Lucifel sits at a lonely booth, but his reason for being there isn't to meet, but rather to gather his thoughts in respite. Before him lies a glass of wine and a small notebook, the latter of which he consults in between the occasional sip.
[9:27 PM] Nerf: As the song starts to come to it's end, a feminine figure begins to approach Lucifel, with the clear intention of interrupting his self-chosen solitude. She's wearing an elegant purple dress, and her hair is collected in a sophisticated bun, a fact that would make her quite a difficult figure to recognize from her usual aspect, if it wasn't for the eyepatch that covers her right eye. Once she reaches her target, Sally takes a seat next to him, taking a long sip from the glass of wine on her hand before uttering a single word. When she speaks, she does so in a casual tone, as if pretending her presence there was something previously concerted, and not something she's imposing to the man in front of her. "I had a feeling I would find you here. It seems you love for fancy restaurants and soporiphic music hasn't changed a bit." Apparently deciding this concise phrase is all introduction needed, she takes a second sip from the glass as she waits for Fel's answer.
[9:46 PM] Deallocate | Hackerman 2.0: Fel looked up sharply as the young woman broke him free from his trance. A slight widening of his eyes were the only sign of surprise as he recognized the well-dressed Branded woman. Not a second passed before his expression settled back into his trademark smirk. His crimson eyes sparkled as he greeted her in return. "What an unexpected pleasure." he replied, inclining his head slightly. "It would appear that you're the more prescient of the two of us; I hadn't the slightest clue I'd be graced by your presence today... Sally." Fel said, barely remembering her name from the sea of faces that was his past business acquaintances. "And dare I say you look even more beautiful than when we last met?" The flattery rolled off his tongue as if second nature, as the criminal tried to worm his way into her favor in the slightest of ways. "Do tell, what brings you here?" Fel inquired casually, probing for information under the pretense of light conversation.
[10:11 PM] Nerf: "More beautiful than the last time we met? Hmm, I don't know. I have a feeling I'm not the first woman you say this to today. You'll need to try better than that." Without even giving it a thought, Sally turned down the compliment just as naturally as Fel had given it. "As for you, I'll have to say you look exactly as you did last time. Not that that is necessarely a bad thing," she added playfully. "In any case, if you were expecting my presence here to be a consequence of yours, I'm afraid I'll have to dissapoint you. I was simply brought here for business reasons, though as you'll understand, I will not share any details. Regardless, it doesn't matter now. Whatever was it that had me occupied has already been finished, so I thought I could spare a second or two for you." Turning around to face the criminal directly, she placed the glass of wine on a small table as the smirk on her face grew wider. "Still, I would be lying if I said I wasn't at least hoping I would get a chance to chat with you. It's not every day you see the head of the Banker's Union this far from Rettati. And I was certainly not expecting you to be joining an expedition. I hope you don't take offense to this, but I didn't have you for the kind to be getting his hands dirty."(edited)
[10:50 PM] Deallocate | Hackerman 2.0: "Keeping secrets from me?" he replied as she avoided answering his question. Lucifel placed a hand on his chest in a mock display of hurt. "Sally, how could you? I thought our relationship meant more to you than that." The young businessman carefully closed his pocketbook before storing it within the left pocket of his suit jacket. "The expedition?" Fel's head tilted quizzically as he processed her means of obtaining the information she had just presented. "Oh. You saw me at the meetinghouse. Meaning... that you're on this 'expedition' as well." He sat up slightly straighter, adjusting his tie habitually. "I must say, this trip is already proving to be more interesting than I had anticipated." "I believe that this mission requires more of a... personal touch." the gentleman said in reply to her last statement. "I simply couldn't stand by and let my informants gather information on their own; history is in the making! And I'm not one to sit by idly and let such an amazing chance slip me by." He paused to take a sip from his drink. "Though I wouldn't say I'll be 'getting my hands dirty'. I've always been more of a spectator than a player myself, you see. I make my moves from the sidelines." "What's more, I'm embarrassed to say that I'm utterly helpless in a fight, and I fear that our trip will land us in an engagement or two. I'm aware that you, however, are not so limited when it comes to combat." He flashed her a smile. "I trust I can count on you to protect me should swords get drawn? To get your hands dirty in my stead, so to speak?"
[11:13 PM] Nerf: "Oh, come on. Don't start acting as if you are offended now. " She rolled her eye in a way Lucifel was sure to see. "The fact you thought that it was something worth attempting is borderline insulting, you know very well how this business works. Besides, I don't think you can talk about our relationship when you didn't even recognize me until I approached you. I don't owe any explanations to someone that can barely remember my face." "If you really want to know my secrets, then how about you share some of yours first? I would love to know how it was you rose to power from one day to another, for example. Is that a story you are willing to tell me? Or will you simply keep trying to play me for a novice that will open up just because you are being a little pushy? Because if that's the case, I will kindly ask you to stop wasting our time." "As for your request, you can forget about it. I'm not exactly a frontline fighter, and much less a babysitter. I'm sure you willl have no trouble finding someone stronger and more willing to aid you than me, so why ask for an arrangement that will be detrimental to us both? I can't do my job properly while protecting you at the same time, nor am I close to the best bodyguard you can get." During the whole exchange, Sally's voice and mannerisms remained devoid of any hostility, but the observant eye could tell her voice had gotten a little colder.
[11:46 PM] Deallocate | Hackerman 2.0: If Fel was off-put by her cold words, he didn't show it. "Easy now, I'm just playing around." As if picking up her slight change in mood, his tone shifted to be more calming in nature. "Or if you'd like, we can say I was testing you to make sure you hadn't softened up to the point that a bit of sentimentality would cloud your judgement." Lucifel slightly raised his glass, as if making a toast on her behalf. "Suffice it to say, you're as collected and tactful as ever, Miss Sally." "Wasting our time?" he inquired. "I honestly apologize if I've made you feel that way. But please know that so long as I'm in your presence, my time is never wasted." His voice was softer, more placating. Were the words spoken from somebody outside of his profession, there would have been no doubt he was being truthful. "I'm sorry to say my apology is twofold, for I cannot reveal that information to you, for any price you'd be able to pay." Lucifel offered her an apologetic grimace. "I do hope you understand why I can't just give out information on how one would commandeer a major government institution."
[11:46 PM] Deallocate | Hackerman 2.0: Lucifel sighed softly. "Let's not... not talk about work. We can both play this game of facades and hidden meanings all day, and nothing will come from it." A wave of exhaustion had rolled over him, and he was suddenly aware of how long it had been since he'd last slept, due to playing his double life. His expression, his previously displayed mannerisms, they were all stripped away as the criminal suddenly seemed to appear so much more genuine. "Can I ask you something small, something inconsequential? Like how you've been faring these days. If you need a way to rationalize it, you can just pretend I'm only asking because I want to make sure a valued trade partner is doing well." "It's just... as soon as I step out of this restaurant, I'll have to play the part of the arrogant banker for a very, very long time. You're one of the few people who knows enough of my true background that I feel I can open up to, for however short a period." He looked away. "But if you just see such frivolities as a 'waste of your time', please, don't stay on my behalf."(edited)

[11:06 AM] Nerf: As the criminal began to apologize, Sally's expression remained stoic, determined not to allow him to get away with it so easily. Who did this man think she was, to be testing her like that? Did he not see her as an equal? Did he really believe some empty words were all it would take? She had her own pride, after all. And it would take more than an apology to mend that. And yet, as Lucifel continued speaking, she couldn't help but slowly soften her expression, her mood gradually improving. By the time the gentleman suggested to move the discussion to something more casual, she found herself breathing in relief, much to her own annoyance. She would never admit it, but talking business with Fel was always an exhausting task. For someone like her, who was used to always be the one to control the conversation, the man in front of her was a real piece if work. No matter how hard she tried, getting a read on him seemed to be impossible. Even worse, whenever she had to deal with the banker, it was her that had to keep her guard up, something that frustrated her to no end. Because of this, Sally was unable to avoid feeling surprised once she saw Lucifel display some vulnerability. She knew very well it could simply be an act, but even then, how often was that you saw the head of the Banker's Union look so tired? Was it really worth it to keep giving him a cold shoulder just because of some stupid pride? Slowly, her factions began to soften, as she gradually started to drop her own guard.
[11:06 AM] Nerf: "Sigh...for someone that can sometimes be so tactless, you really have a way with words. Very well, I'll accept your apologies. I do not know if I can trust them to be sincere, but this night is simply too beautiful to be wasting it over some petty discussions." As the words flowed out of her mouth, a subtle smile started to from. "Some frivolous talk sounds good, I'll admit. Maybe even some frivolous activities. Even someone like me needs to take a break every now and then, after all. You know, how about we go dancing one of these day, for the old times? It would be nice to forget about work for a minute, even if it's all just a farce. I know we are both busy people, but I'm sure even us can find a moment to spare."
[11:49 AM] Deallocate | Hackerman 2.0: "Tactless? Me? I hadn't realized it was so evident..." Lucifel replied, seeming to be taken aback. Though where the 'fake' Lucifel would have taken in in stride, all the young man did was chuckle good-naturedly and shake his head in dissatisfaction. "I'll admit, any tenderness I display is almost always... manufactured." The ruby-eyed young man rubbed his brow and frowned. "I just don't get it. I've read countless books on how to appear genuinely kind and caring. It's an important trait to possess in negotiations, after all. But no matter how much I study and practice, it always seems to evade me." "I'm jealous, you know. Of you and your Nest." When his eyes met hers, though, there was no envy or greed. Just a kind of quiet sadness. "You always seem so... genuine. The way you act and talk towards them, it just emanates the kind of caring I can never mimic." His finger idly traced the corner of his glass, the kind of idle motion frowned upon in any formal meeting. "From one friend to another... how do you manage it? You inspire the kind of vigor and strength in your people I could never hope for." "W-wait, dancing?" he said, his voice briefly breaking as she brought the subject to the table. "With me? Uhh, how do I say this..." The well-dressed man rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. "I know you take me for some kind of sweet-talking ladies' man. But I really don't get out much. I, uh, I've never so much as attempted dancing before. II appreciate the offer, really. It's just that... I don't think I'd know where to start." Lucifel let off a nervous chuckle.(edited)
[12:20 PM] Nerf: "I'm afraid kindness and care are not something I'm able to teach you, for they are not manufactured, but the real thing. It might be hypocritical of me to say this, but people aren't as easy to decieve as you think they are. You can practice all you want, but it will never feel as sincere as the genuine thing." She straightened up her posture, displaying a certain pride. "The loyalty my Nest shows to me isn't due to something as superficial as a simple act: they are my family, not by blood, but by choice, and I would go to great lenghts for them. That kind of relationship is not something you can learn from books, I'm afraid." The young woman took yet another sip from her glass, before placing it back on the table. "I hope you don't take offense to this, but no amount of practice can completely disguise how dead you heart is. As long as you keep seeing people as mere tools to be used, kindness and care are something that will continue to evade you." Upon seeing Lucifel's sudden display of nervousness, she couldn't help but let out an audible chuckle, before giving the criminal some sort of a mocking look. "Really? So the great Lucifel is all talk but no action? Talk about a dissapointment. Still.." Sally stared straight at Fel, as if a wild predator that had just cornered her prey "...that only makes me want to do it even more. A chance to see someone like you out of his comfort zone is not something I'd like to miss, and who knows, maybe learning one thing or two about dancing could help you in some future negotiations? Just think of it as an old friend teaching you some useful skills if you want. I won't insist if you refuse, but an offer like this is not something I give to anyone. It'd be a pity if you said no."
[1:08 PM] Deallocate | Hackerman 2.0: "My heart, dead? Now come on, that's a bit of an exaggeration." he said, scoffing lightly. "Sure, I may not be the most empathetic person in the world, but there are plenty of people I care for-" Lucifel broke off suddenly. "Like- like.... wait, they've been dead for years now. Well, there's... oh, but they betrayed me." Lucifel bit his lip in consternation. "Huh. For years now, the only people left in my life are those who serve me directly, and business associates like you. When along the way did care and love start to mean so little to me...?" "I mean, caring for others is dangerous in our line of work. It inevitably leads to people being leveraged against you, and there's always the chance you can lose a loved one. I guess I just decided that in the end, it wasn't worth it. And so I distanced myself, rather than risk getting hurt." His eyes snapped back to her, displaying a sort of quiet, fiery resolution. "Sally. You'd know, better than anybody. Is it truly worth it for me to learn to care for others? Or am I better off maintaining my ever-present guise of a cold and calculating criminal?" Fel winced as she chuckled in response to his inability to dance, seeming slightly hurt. "Hey now, I went out on a limb to trust you with that information. You don't have to taunt me about it..." He grimaced. "Geez, all this talking about how kind you are made me forget how positively vicious you could be at times." The banker stood up a little straighter as he forced himself to overcome his hesitance. "But I'm not one to shy away at the face of new experiences, and I'm certainly not going to ignore a challenge. You're on, Sally." "That being said, this is strictly off the books, you hear me?" He jabbed a finger in her direction. "If you tell anybody about this or somehow capitalize on it in any way, I'll put you out of business."
[2:04 PM] Nerf: "Worth it? Hmm, I couldn't tell. It's not really something I do based on what benefits it could give me, but simply something that happens. But I can at least tell you the trust my men have on me is not something I would trade for anything in the world." Tilting her head to the side, she thought about her answer for a couple seconds before continuining. "I don't think you should be asking yourself if trusting those around you is worth it, but rather if the ones around you are worthy of your trust. The care I have for my men is not something I blindly give them, but the result of surrounding myself by people I can rely on. I have known most of them for years." "I guess I should apologize, I am not giving you much of an answer, am I? Still, I don't think this is an issue that I can solve for you. The matters of your heart are something only you can find the answer to, as cheesy as it may sound. I can merely try to point you in the right direction, if such a thing even exists. The rest is up to you." As she heard Lucifel accept her invitation she couldn't help but to crack a faint smile, only to be replaced by a scowl once he followed it up with a threat. "You wound me with your words, Fel, do you really think so lowly of me? I'm not expecting you to blindly place your trust on me, but you should know very well I wouldn't have stayed at the top of this business for so long if I didn't know to choose what battles to fight. A confrontation between our bands would undoubtedly have disastrous results for us both, regardless of who came on top. I'd expect you of all people to know that I'm not one to pick fights where I have nothing to win." Breaking down eye contact, she stopped scowling for the time being. "Still, I didn't approach you to be giving or receiving threats. And weren't you the one that suggested to keep business talk out of this? No wonder you look so tired, even in a moment like this, you are unable to drop your guard for a second."
[2:45 PM] Deallocate | Hackerman 2.0: "Think lowly of you? The opposite, actually. It's because I think so highly of you that I dare not let down my guard down. I'm fully aware of how cruel you can be to your prey, and we are competitors, in a manner of speaking." Lucifel reviewed his words. "Um, that's a compliment, by the way. Truthfully." "I only stayed at the top of this business by exerting a healthy amount of caution and vigilance. And I'm more than aware that were I to be removed from the picture, a great many number of my customers would likely flock to you instead." He offered her a conspiratorial smile. "I'm sure you feel the same way too, right?" "Actually, now I'm curious. Let's say the roles were reversed. Would you honestly trust me if I to have dirt on you that I could use to defame you and unravel your carefully lain facades?" Lucifel leaned forward, as if highly interested. "If you actually do trust me to that extent, allow me to apologize. You'd also be a far braver individual than I."(edited)
[3:28 PM] Nerf: "Oh, you misunderstand my words." She spoke in a dispassionate tone, as if the topic was terribly boring for her. "You do very well in being cautious around me, and I can assure you trust is not something I feel about you. Get too comfortable around me, and have for sure you won't be living for long. But, even then, defaming you? Is that really how you think I operate?" By the way Sally was looking at Fel, one could think she was terribly offended by his words. "Please. My methods are much cleaner than that." Returning the conspirational smile, she continued to explain what her words meant: "Look, if I ever decided to get rid of you, I wouldn't do it by exposing some dirt. You are far too dangerous to be openly challenged like that. Do you really think I would be foolish enough to take such a risk? No, if I ever wanted you out of the picture, a stab in the back is all what you'd get. Extortion and manipulation are better saved for smaller prey. Oh, I also meant that as a compliment, of course." The smirk on her face grew wider, if not threatening, as she raised the glass on her hand for a toast. "I'm glad to see you still have some respect for me, in any case. For a moment I was worried I might have been losing my touch."(edited)
[7:03 PM] Deallocate | Hackerman 2.0: "Kill me in my sleep? I had forgotten what a charmer you were." He rubbed his brow wearily. "Please, try not to fuel my paranoia further. I get precious little sleep as is." Lucifel proffered her a wry smile. "And to think most men would fantasize of a beautiful woman visiting their bedchambers in the dark of night. In my case, it's one of my worst nightmares." he said in an attempt to inject a bit of levity into the conversation. Fel raised his glass in turn to lightly clink against hers. "To the longevity of our arrangement. May we not find cause to defame or backstab the other for many years to come."
[7:51 PM] Nerf: "I will share the sentiment. It would be a pity to lose such an interesting conversation partner. I sincerely hope the day where we'd serve each other better dead than alive never comes." As if to echo her own words, her usual smirk was replaced by a more genuine, warmer smile. "For the sake of your good sleep, I will at least clarify that I have no intentions of killing you in the near future. Maybe if you were ever to try to expand your influence to Naxos, or if I ever decide to broaden my area of operations to outside of the country such measures will become necessary, but for the time being, I believe your existence is something I can tolerate without having to compromise my own interests." The later statement was followed by a playful, informal wink. "Of course, I doubt you'll simply take my word for it." "Ah, but enough of such unpleasant topics. Isn't there anything else we can talk about? How about you tell me the reason you were sitting alone in a place like this during such a splendid night? Were you perhaps attempting to collect your own thoughts before I rudely interrupted, or was such a display of solitude nothing but a cry for help, in the hopes someone would take pity on your lonely soul?"
[8:29 PM] Deallocate | Hackerman 2.0: He let out a mock gasp. "How very astute of you! It must have been my subconscious desire to bond with another human being that led me to this place, in the hopes a young woman would sit down across from me and teach my poor empty heart about the meaning of love." He sighed passionately. "You have foiled my plans, madam, and doomed me to a night of solitude." Having finished his foolery, Lucifel seemed to ponder her question. "Hmm. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to tell you. And I do rather like to brag..." He shrugged nonchalantly, before pulling his pocketbook from the left inner pocket of his suit jacket. "To tell you the truth, I was doing work. Or to be more precise, giving orders to my informants." The young man produced a pen, and showed Sally a page marked 'Naxos' in the upper margin. Very carefully, he wrote 'Status?' on the top line. "You've heard of the principle of Parallax Resonance, right?" he inquired, while he idly waited with the open notebook on the table. "Skilled mages can associate a pair of objects so that they 'resonate' on a spacial level; i.e. whatever happens to one object is applied to the other. For all intents and purposes, the object is in two places at once."
[8:29 PM] Deallocate | Hackerman 2.0: He gestured to the open page, where the words 'Wyvern outbreak, northern forests' appeared on the page as if being written by an invisible pen. "Well, I applied the property on a far greater scale. My informants across the archipelago all stay in contact through me instantaneously through an identical pocketbook. I use it to keep up with current events, as well as to give precise instructions to my underlings." Before more text could appear on the page, he snapped the small book shut and replaced it within his jacket. "The reason I'm comfortable telling you such an important trade secret is because I doubt you'd be able to take advantage of it. Professional mages have trouble maintaining the connection over a couple of miles, let alone to over four dozen different points across an entire continent." "Not to brag too much, but the advancements on efficiency are somewhat of a personal invention." He smirked proudly. "As such, it's not the kind of thing that can be easily duplicated, no matter now much money you invest."
[10:10 PM] Nerf: During the entire monologue where Fel proclaimed about the wonders of his invention, Sally's expression remained stoic, not a hint of surprise or admiration showing on her face. Once the criminal finished his explanation, she merely nodded her head in response. "Interesting" she admitted plainly, in an almost bored tone. For the casual eye, it would be easy to think that what the crimson-haired man had shown her was only the simple magic trick of a beginner, and that her response was but a mere courtesy, a polite attempt to disguise her lack of interest. And yet, the whole time her mind was working non-stop, trying to determine in what ways she could use that information to her advantage. She did not doubt Lucifel was telling her the truth when saying this was not something she could easily replicate, but what if she tried to interfere with it instead? Would a skilled mage be able to mess with a communication network like that one, shall the time were she and Fel became enemies ever become a reality? It was at least something worth looking into. Even if it did not work, what if she captured one of Fel's informants and took the book for herself? Would that allow her to infiltrate the banker's network, and decieve him through false messages, or could the books only be operated by a certain person? She would never know if she didn't try it. Of course, this didn't mean she had any intentions to antagonize the criminal for the time being, but being prepared for a potential conflict was never a bad idea, if only just as a precaution. More important, why was Fel telling her all this? Had his desire to brag about his invention blinded him to the point where he had not realized how she could use that information against him? Or was he perhaps trying to lure her into a trap, a sort of test to see if she had any plans to turn against him? There were many possible reasons, but she could only wonder...
[10:10 PM] Nerf: Suddenly realizing how long it had been since she had last said a word, she quickly broke the silence, in a somewhat forced attempt not to look too suspicious. "I have to admit, an invention like this could have some interesting applications. Too bad it had to be discovered by a simple criminal, who knows what could have been had this knowledge been used for good instead" she added sarcastically. "Still, I did not know you were so versed in the art of magic. How is that someone with so much potential can claim to be defenseless in the battlefield? Have you ever considered learning some spells to defend yourself from the beautiful women that often visit your bedchambers at midnight?" she mocked him.
[10:31 PM] Deallocate | Hackerman 2.0: All the while she sat contemplatively, Lucifel watched her quietly. When Sally finally broke the uneasy silence, the criminal did naught other than offer her a knowing smile. "Oh, don't worry. When I'm old and have had my fun, I'll patent my system so the rest of the world can gain access to instantaneous communication." He broke off with a frown. "Well, that is to say, after it's perfected a bit more. Right now, the means by which it runs is... frowned upon, to say in the least." "Combat magic? No, I've never had much of a taste for it. What was it that you said earlier? That I don't like to get my hands dirty." Lucifel glanced down at an open palm. "I strictly limit myself to spell theory." he said, lying flawlessly. "Anyhow, I doubt there's much combat magic that would come to my rescue while I sleep helplessly." "Speaking of sleep, I believe I've kept my bedchamber waiting long enough. I'm afraid I'll need to retreat for the night." Lucifel drained the last dregs of his drink. "I thank you for keeping a lonely man company for the evening, though. It was... enjoyable having the opportunity to speak easily with you." In a fluid motion, he rose to his feet and offered Sally his hand. "Would the young lady allow me to walk her home?" he asked in an overdramatic rendition of his silkiest voice.(edited)
September 25, 2017
[1:39 PM] Nerf: "Home?" she asked intrigued. "Are you sure you want to be walking alone with me in the dead of the night? I always thought you were more cautious than that." A faint smile started to form on her lips. "Still, I'm not one to turn down such a kind offer." Using the extended hand as help she stood up from her seat, then crossed her arm under Fel's. "I have to wonder though" she pointed not without certain amusement. "Are you concerned about my safety, or is it that you want someone to protect you as you go back to your own place? Could it be that you are scared of walking alone at this hours?"
[2:11 PM] Deallocate | Hackerman 2.0: "My lady, you wound me!" Fel replied playfully. "Obviously, I would go through the Gates of Hell itself if only to show a charming woman proper courtesy." he said as he guided her through the front door of the restaurant. "My own possible demise at the hands of the woman in question is but another brick in the road to chivalry." The banker couldn't keep a straight face during the statement, and finally broke into a smile. "The way I like to see it, a woman dressed such as yourself could draw unwanted attention. But with a steely gentleman by your side, they'll have no doubt that you're already taken." He gave her an innocent smile. "And on the off chance that somebody tries to mug us, I know that you'll be there to protect me." The two of them walked off into the quaint streets as the setting sun cast shadows upon the small town.(edited)
